About heatpump.blue
What it does
heatpump.blue finds the outdoor temperature below which your furnace (gas, propane or oil) costs less to run than your heat pump. It works that out from your ZIP code, your heat pump’s model number and your energy prices, and tells you what to set on your thermostat. It also compares up to four heat pump models on your rates, and has setting guides for common thermostats. It is free, needs no account, and works anywhere in the US.
Where the data comes from
- Hourly weather observations: NOAA’s Integrated Surface Database, from the station nearest your ZIP code.
- ZIP code locations: US Census Bureau ZIP Code Tabulation Areas.
- Electricity, gas, propane and heating-oil prices: the US Energy Information Administration.
- Which utility serves your ZIP code: NREL’s utility lookup, via OpenEI (CC BY 4.0).
- Heat pump cold-weather performance: published certification and manufacturer data, looked up by model number through rebate.blue.
Each source is linked, with its licence, on How it works, along with what the tool does not model.
