Carrier Infinity and Bryant Evolution heat pump settings

On communicating Carrier Infinity and Bryant Evolution systems, the lockouts live under Heat Source Lockouts. Older non-communicating Carrier/Bryant hybrid-heat systems (Performance Edge Thermidistat) use a different, numbered installer menu, covered below.

Where to find it

Communicating systems: touch Menu, then touch and hold SERVICE for at least 10 seconds until it turns green → Setup → Heat Source Lockouts. Outdoor temperature comes from the communicating outdoor unit.

Infinity System Control / Bryant Evolution (communicating)

Defrost with Furnace/Electric HeatWhether your furnace or other heat may run during a defrost cycle.Yes / No (default Yes).

Performance Edge Thermidistat (non-communicating hybrid heat)

Hold FAN about 10 seconds for installer options. Hybrid Heat only; requires an outdoor sensor.

How your heatpump.blue result maps onto this

heatpump.blue finds the outdoor temperature below which your furnace or other heat costs less than running the heat pump, for your weather, your model and your rates. On Carrier Infinity / Bryant Evolution, that number goes into the setting below.

  • Dual fuel: set HP Lockout (or Option 09) to your heatpump.blue recommendation, with the Furnace/Electric Heat Lockout (or Option 08) at or above it, or None to never lock out.
  • Electric strips: set HP Lockout to None, and set Electric Heat Lockout a few degrees above where your heat pump stops keeping up (15 °F minimum on communicating systems).

Enter your ZIP, your heat pump model and your rates, and get the lockout temperature that costs you least, with the range it is sensitive to.

Common mistakes

  • Holding SERVICE for less than 10 seconds — the installer menu only unlocks once the icon turns green.
  • Looking for Heat Source Lockouts on a Performance Edge Thermidistat — that line uses the numbered Option 08/09 installer menu instead.
  • Setting the aux/furnace lockout below the compressor lockout. That leaves a band of outdoor temperatures where nothing is allowed to run. Keep the aux/furnace lockout at or above the compressor lockout.
  • Changing the setting without writing down the factory default first. These are installer menus; changing them is safe, but you may want to undo it.
  • Assuming the factory default is the cheapest setting for your home. It is a generic default, not calculated for your climate, your model or your energy rates.
  • Forgetting the setting needs an outdoor temperature source (a wired sensor, a communicating outdoor unit, or internet weather) to do anything at all.

Questions

What is Carrier Infinity HP Lockout?
The outdoor temperature below which the heat pump compressor stops and the furnace or electric heat takes over. Set it under Menu → Setup → Heat Source Lockouts after holding SERVICE for 10 seconds.
What is "integrated control switchover temperature"?
Installer shorthand for the same dual-fuel handover point, used on some Carrier/Bryant furnace control boards — functionally the same setting as HP Lockout.
