Mitsubishi Electric heat pump settings
Mitsubishi's dual-fuel switchover is called the Economic Balance Point, and on intelli-HEAT systems it only has six fixed choices — not a dial. kumo station systems with a separate furnace or other heater use a different pair of settings.
Where to find it
intelli-HEAT (PAA coil on a gas furnace): kumo cloud app (PAA Settings → Balance Point), an MA controller, the MHK2, or indoor-unit function settings Mode 8 / Mode 10. kumo station: kumo cloud → kumo station backup settings (requires a wired outdoor air sensor).
intelli-HEAT (Mitsubishi PAA coil on a gas furnace)
Above the Economic Balance Point the heat pump may run; below it only the furnace runs. There is also a self-learned Capacity Balance Point: if the heat pump cannot hold the room, the system notes the outdoor temperature and hands over to the furnace.
| Setting | What it does | Values |
|---|---|---|
| Economic Balance Point — Mode 8=1, Mode 10=1 | Switchover temperature, choice 1 of 6. | 9 °F (−11 °F on outdoor units with extended low-temperature reporting). |
| Economic Balance Point — Mode 8=1, Mode 10=2 | Switchover temperature, choice 2 of 6. | 14 °F (9 °F on those units). |
| Economic Balance Point — Mode 8=2, Mode 10=2 | Switchover temperature, choice 3 of 6. | 19 °F. |
| Economic Balance Point — Mode 8=3, Mode 10=1 | Switchover temperature, choice 4 of 6. | 27 °F. |
| Economic Balance Point — Mode 8=3, Mode 10=2 | Switchover temperature, choice 5 of 6 (factory default). | 32 °F. |
| Economic Balance Point — Mode 8=2, Mode 10=1 | Furnace only — the heat pump never runs. | n/a |

Ranges are not given in the public manual.
| Setting | What it does | Values |
|---|---|---|
| Only Backup | Outdoor temperature below which only the furnace or other heater runs. | Not stated in the public manual. |
| Only heat pump | Outdoor temperature above which only the heat pump runs. | Not stated in the public manual. |
| Delay | A changeover delay between the two modes. | Not stated in the public manual. |
How your heatpump.blue result maps onto this
heatpump.blue finds the outdoor temperature below which your furnace or other heat costs less than running the heat pump, for your weather, your model and your rates. On Mitsubishi Electric, that number goes into the setting below.
- intelli-HEAT: choose the listed Economic Balance Point value closest to your heatpump.blue recommendation. If two choices are close, your result's cost range shows which is actually cheaper.
- kumo station: set Only Backup to your heatpump.blue recommendation.
- Ductless heat pump with a separate boiler or furnace and no kumo station: there is usually no outdoor switchover at all — the heat pumps and the boiler run on separate thermostats. Keep the heat pumps on, set the boiler a few degrees below the heat pumps' setpoint so it only fills in, and turn the heat pumps off only below your recommended temperature if your result says to.

Common mistakes
- Expecting a dial — intelli-HEAT's Economic Balance Point is six fixed choices (plus "furnace only"), not an arbitrary temperature.
- Missing that the exact values shift on outdoor units with extended low-temperature reporting (9 °F and 14 °F become −11 °F and 9 °F).
- Setting the aux/furnace lockout below the compressor lockout. That leaves a band of outdoor temperatures where nothing is allowed to run. Keep the aux/furnace lockout at or above the compressor lockout.
- Changing the setting without writing down the factory default first. These are installer menus; changing them is safe, but you may want to undo it.
- Assuming the factory default is the cheapest setting for your home. It is a generic default, not calculated for your climate, your model or your energy rates.
- Forgetting the setting needs an outdoor temperature source (a wired sensor, a communicating outdoor unit, or internet weather) to do anything at all.
Questions
- What is Mitsubishi Economic Balance Point?
- The dual-fuel switchover temperature on an intelli-HEAT system: above it the heat pump may run, below it only the gas furnace runs. It only has six fixed values (9, 14, 19, 27, 32 °F, or furnace-only), set through Mode 8 and Mode 10, not an open temperature field.
- Which Economic Balance Point value should I use?
- Whichever of the six fixed choices is closest to your heatpump.blue recommendation. If your number falls between two choices, check your result's cost range — it shows how much each nearby setting costs, so you can pick the cheaper neighbor if they are close.
