Trane, American Standard and Lennox heat pump settings

Trane and American Standard (XL824, XL850) call these Compressor Lockout and Auxiliary Heat Lockout. Lennox's iComfort S30 calls them Low and High Balance Point. We did not find manufacturer documentation for the XL1050, ComfortLink, S40 or E30 menus — check your unit's installer manual.

Where to find it

Trane/American Standard XL824/XL850: Home → Menu → Service → Technician Access → Proceed → Installer Setup → Lockout Settings (an outdoor sensor must be enabled first). Lennox iComfort S30: Menu → Settings → Advanced Settings → View Dealer Control Center → Equipment → Balance Point Control.

Trane / American Standard XL824, XL850

If both lockouts are enabled they must be at least 10° apart, and a locked-out source returns only after the outdoor temperature moves 4° past the setting. With no lockouts enabled, the XL824 picks the heat source itself on dual fuel.

How your heatpump.blue result maps onto this

heatpump.blue finds the outdoor temperature below which your furnace or other heat costs less than running the heat pump, for your weather, your model and your rates. On Trane, American Standard & Lennox, that number goes into the setting below.

  • Trane/American Standard, dual fuel: enable Compressor Lockout and set the Compressor Lockout Setting to your heatpump.blue recommendation (5 °F minimum; leave it disabled below that). Electric strips: leave Compressor Lockout disabled and enable Auxiliary Heat Lockout (32 °F minimum).
  • Lennox, dual fuel: set Low Balance Point to your recommendation, with High Balance Point at or above it. Electric strips: set Low Balance Point at its minimum, High Balance Point a few degrees above where your heat pump stops keeping up.

Common mistakes

  • Enabling only one of the Trane lockout pairs — the temperature field does nothing until its Enable/Disable toggle is switched on.
  • Setting Trane's two lockouts less than 10° apart — the thermostat enforces a minimum gap between them.
  • Not realizing a locked-out source on Trane only returns after the outdoor temperature moves 4° past the threshold (hysteresis) — a setting that looks ignored for a few degrees is working as designed.
  • Setting the aux/furnace lockout below the compressor lockout. That leaves a band of outdoor temperatures where nothing is allowed to run. Keep the aux/furnace lockout at or above the compressor lockout.
  • Changing the setting without writing down the factory default first. These are installer menus; changing them is safe, but you may want to undo it.
  • Assuming the factory default is the cheapest setting for your home. It is a generic default, not calculated for your climate, your model or your energy rates.
  • Forgetting the setting needs an outdoor temperature source (a wired sensor, a communicating outdoor unit, or internet weather) to do anything at all.

Questions

What temperature should Trane Compressor Lockout Setting be?
On a dual-fuel system, your heatpump.blue recommendation (5 °F minimum, since that is Trane's lowest setting). Make sure the separate Compressor Lockout toggle is Enabled, or the number does nothing.
What is Lennox Low Balance Point?
The outdoor temperature below which the heat pump compressor locks out and your furnace or other heat takes over — the same idea as Trane's Compressor Lockout, under a different name.
